Announcing MisInfoConX

Welcome back, hacks and hackers! We’re pleased to announce the first MisinfoConX in Scotland: MisinfoConX is a series of local, community-focused conferences aiming to combat misinformation in communities around the world. The first will take place in Stirling next month, and early bird tickets are available now. Join us at the details below ⬇️ Worth a read: Catarse, a Brazilian crowdfunding platform, is creating a fund to finance and promote independent journalism projects (Knight Center) Two professors at a Spanish university launched Periodista de Datos, a project that aggregated over 300 journalists in Spain and Latin America to promote data journalism collaboration (Online Journalism Blog) A Knight Foundation report looked into how political influencers add to the spread of misinformation and fake news on social media sites (Knight Foundation) Influence is a crucial phenomenon online: it means having a powerful voice and using that voice to have an impact, whether political or commercial.

Media Indaba Africa expands to four cities

Media Indaba was started by Hacks/Hackers Cape Town a few years ago, and this year the conference is expanding to include multiple cities in Africa. Applications are open for day one, day two and day three of hands-on sessions focused on the media, land use and revenue generation. Want to be part of Media Indaba’s special 1 day conference on land and the media in SA? Expect a mix of short talks by experts, case studies of #landjournalism projects, and short, impactful data workshops.
