Austin’s Hacks and Hackers came out for this panel on Integrating Tech Skills in Your Communications Career, a topic that is of great interest to students, recent grads, job-seekers and seasoned professionals, as they wish to update their skills to reflect the coding and social media requirements of modern media. This panel included four recent graduates who are all using tech skills in different ways in communications careers.
Last week was a bit of a blur: after meeting with the Chicago Tribune News Applications team, and descending into the Tribune dungeon for an evening of brainstorming with the local Hacks/Hackers chapter, I was off to New York for the Hacks/Hackers NYC “Beyond Comments: Discuss, brainstorm with Shirky, Michel, Gupta” event at NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts (home of the ITP program).
Sadly, I didn’t manage to capture Clay Shirky’s talk where he touched on some of his recent research into online conversations.
Mozilla, Knight Foundation, Hacks/Hackers London and The Guardian hosted a brainstorming session in London on May 28, as part of the Mozilla Journalism (#MoJo) initiative. I have been to a lot of journalism-technology brainstorming sessions in the last few years, but I have to say this was one of the best executed I have ever been to. A lot of people have asked me why that is.

The second meeting of Hacks/Hackers Buenos Aires – Demo Day will take place on June 8, and will be followed a week later on June 15 and 16 by our first hackathon in Rosario, which is located 300 kilometers from Buenos Aires, as part ofthe 4th International Forum on Digital Journalism Rosario.
We hope to have a good turnout at both, as in the first meeting of Hacks/Hackers Buenos Aires we gathered about 140 professionals, including editors, journalists and major developers and started projects and proposals.
I’m happy to announce that we’ve successfully launched a Hacks/Hackers Meetup in Colorado. We now have two Meetups under our belt and both have gone great.
Both Denver and Boulder have a strong history in both publishing and technology. Two of the largest publishing startups in the past decade, The Examiner and Associated Content, both came from this area. With Techstars, the five-year-old incubator that was just voted the top ranked in the country, Boulder’s startup ecosystem continues to grow and produce more and more innovative companies.

A group of 30-plus hacks and hackers gathered last week in the basement of the Tribune Tower for a “MoJo Beerstorm.”
The event, hosted by the Chicago chapter of Hacks/Hackers, was a brainstorming meeting intended to inspire participants to submit ideas for the Knight/Mozilla MoJo Innovation Challenge – a chance for individuals to shape the future of news and re-open the web, à la Firefox.
Phillip Smith, a key leader of the MoJo Challenge, flew in from Toronto to attend the May 24 event.
Almost two years ago, a couple of people interested in computer programming in journalism brainstormed an idea for a website where software developers working in journalism and media could go to get solutions to their programming problems from their peers.
The site — at help.hackshackers.com — has been running since launched in April 2010, attracting more than 200 registered users, 145 questions and more than 500,000 page views.

Join Hacks/Hackers Austin on June 7 for a panel discussion on ways to integrate tech skills in a communications career. Four recent grads will discuss their positions at the Statesman, Austin Post, Texas Tribune and Facebook. They will share their experiences in using technology in their jobs and personal lives, what they learned in school, what they wish they had learned and how they acquire the skills they need. The panel will be moderated by Travis Swicegood (@tswicegood), a developer at Texas Tribune, who will provide the context of how technology is shaping processes in the modern newsroom.
