Hacks/Hackers style guide released today

Today we’re releasing the Hacks/Hackers style guide. As our organization continues to grow rapidly with chapters across the world (five countries and counting), it’s become clear we need visual brand consistency. We wanted to make it easier for our members to access and create high-quality logos for everything from events to websites to Hacks/Hackers gear. As our brand continues to grow, we also wanted to explain how we ended up with our logo design in the first place.

Hacks/Hackers Toronto to Ignite it up on Dec. 14

We’re happy to announce the second gathering of Hacks/Hackers Toronto. This gathering is right in the heart of holiday season, so we’re calling it a holiday gathering. However, there will be no jolly men in red suits or mistletoe at this event, we assure you. Instead, we will have a handful of local hacks and hackers who will each entertain us with a short, Ignite-style, presentation. Each presentation will explore that special place where journalism and technology collide and will — hopefully!

The next meeting of Hacks/Hackers ATX (and last of 2010) will be on Dec. 8 at the Austin American-Statesman, 6:30-8:30pm. This meeting seeks to bridge the gap between journalists and programmers by explaining some of the terms and techniques of each field. Collaborate on your Knight News Challenge ideas

We’re trying to spur ideas/collaboration among Hacks/Hackers members for the Knight News Challenge, a grant program that supports news innovation that has a Dec. 1 deadline. So far more than $20 million has been granted to dozens of projects, including Spot.us, DocumentCloud, Ushahidi and MediaBugs. Who knows? Yours could be next. The News Challenge gave support to our series of hackathons across the country. Inspired by the collaboration and the people we met, we’ve created a cross-chapter Google doc where you can leave thoughts/contact information/skills.

Download the new Hacks/Hackers membership signup form

We’ve updated the Hacks/Hackers membership signup form on Scribd. The changes: new logo, and also knowing what kinds of volunteering we need on a chapter-by-chapter basis — photography and blogging for example. Download and use for your chapter, if you need. Make sure to keep a list of people’s email addresses, as Meetup does not allow us access to that. Hacks/Hackers Membership Signup Form, Version 2.0
